Martin Lades

1998-10-18; Owens:Piute to Flynns, 8.9mi, informally declared,
glider: FreeX Spark, white/red.

 Eric Reed  Sunday,

10/18/98, I flew with the rest of them. From Upper Piute, flew
south over Flynn's launch and continued south to Black Mtn and then angled
out to the road and Big Pine. I landed N37'08.730 x W118'17.190, just south
of town. Don't have the launch coords for Upper Piute, but maybe we can use
someone else's coords? George and I launched from the same place & based on
his Piute coords of N 37' 31.361", W 118' 17.359" my GPS tells me I flew 26
miles. As far as declaration goes, it would have been Flynn's, if it was
anything and was definitely of the informal variety. If you think it might
count call me and I can try and remember more subtle details.

Monday, 10/19/98, I lunched Flynn's planning an upwind out and return to
Piute if conditions were good (discussion of plan with my flying partner,
Brian and announced over radio before leaving Flynn's area.)
Flew north to just beyond Piute launch: N37'31.961' x W118'17.417, turned
around and flew back over Flynn's launch (completing an out and return of 18
or 19 mi) and continued south to just beyond the Tinemaha Reservoir, landing
at N37'00.505' x W118'13.984. Total distance of somewhere around 45 miles
but I don't know the exact coords of Flynn's -- maybe you have that
somewhere. I can make some guess based on my flying track if not.

The moment I got to the south end of the ridge, which was into sun and into
the prevailing flow, I caught a real thermal instead of the trash that was
available in front of launch and along the east side of that ridge(really
north-east, but who's counting.) It didn't take me very high but let me get
over the ridge which was a much better place to be and eventually let me
catch something going higher (13 maybe?)

Then I didn't find much going north and got low again a few miles north of
the pass (towards Bridgeport) and hooked into muscular little beast at
probably 700 or 800 AGL (after it got done wrestling with and scaring me.)
That was what I was busy with while Jill was trying to talk to me on the
radio. Anyway, that guy got me nice and high and let me cruise cloud to
cloud past Bridgeport, up the east side of the reservoir and the mtns on the
east side of hwy 182. Somewhere along that way I punched through the corner
of a cloud at 16,900 or so.

All in all by the time I crossed the state line (which is not really that
far beyond the end of the reservoir) I was not feeling so great. Woke up
Sunday morning with a sore throat and all that time at altitude wasn't doing
me any good. Wavered back and forth for a while between thinking I should
go land and then getting lower and deciding to cruise on a little. Circled
with a sailplane for a little while somewhere near Sweetwater then flew into
the bald mountain area east of hwy 338 (which continues north.) Got low
deep over Bald and decided I'd better head towards a glide out to another
north/south road I could see to the east of the mountains I was in but got
blocked in that effort by a significant NE wind and lots of sink. Was
looking at kind of a long hike out (but could've landed anywhere) when I hit
a thermal and climbed drifting strongly towards the SW. Go figure. (I'd
had a moderate tailwind (southerly) in the early part of the flight which
had petered off to about nothing for the last while.)

Well, I was loosing my gumption - feeling crappy, not wanting to hike too
much and knowing that my cell phone would be useless, I decided to go with
the flow and turn back south and see if I could make it back to Bridgeport.
Up I went, no problem. Loads of lift, loads of development. Would have
been cake to get back I think, but one last trip to altitude was enough to
spend any remaining will I had and I turned back north one more time to head
for the nice green fields of Sweetwater ranch. (Didn't land in the green
fields - there were cows in 'em - but at least it was sagebrush _next to_
green fields.)

Then, had the ridiculous luck that the first vehicle by as I was setting
down my wing was a guy who's daughter has paraglided and who's always wanted
to himself. He was a civil engineer who knew Nevada like the back of his
hand and said he was going to Hawthorne (where Jill was.) The only drawback
was I was in the car and on my retrieve before my poor stomach had a chance
to settle and I spent most of the ride staring straight ahead and breathing
deeply - doing my best to keep nausea at bay and keep up a friendly
conversation at the same time.

Probably not the most purely pleasurable day of flying I've done but
certainly one of the prettiest and maybe the best conditions I've come
across in CA (once away from the launch ridge, that is.) Yeah, I don't
think I've seen such a combination in California of really strong lift
sustained all day without significant wind and without any overdevelopment.
I guess I'll come again.
